Kernza® is the tradename of the intermediate wheatgrass Thinopyrum intermedium domesticated into a perennial grain crop through the work of The Land Institute, a research-based non-profit organization located in Salina, Kansas.
Kernza® (intermediate wheatgrass Thinopyrum intermedium) provides valuable ecosystem services. Due to its extremely large root system (up to 15’ in length) farmers growing this crop will sequester more carbon and, because it does not require annual tillage, reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Annual crops are commonly maintained by yearly tillage as well as pesticide and fertilizer applications, all of which are energy intensive, biologically destructive and polluting. Tilling leaves soil exposed to erosion, and land use is the second only to power generation in creating greenhouse gasses.
